The Music that Made You

Is 90s Minimalism Back?

Music is a universal language that needs no translation to be heard. But to understand it fluently, you should analyze its history and impact on our society. Through revolts fueled by fury, periods of peace, and passionate displays of talent, music always takes its place in our history. Music also has its place in the fashion world, helping artists find themselves and serving as a foundation for those dedicated to expression and to countering norms. Europe’s grand history can be told through music and its impact on the clothing we admire today.

To, Europe

The Middle Ages mark the beginning of European music. Medieval musicians were respected and were mostly travelers. Their music was the foundation for great thinkers and community standards. They focused on comfort and practicality in their wear, prioritizing loose layers. Some minstrels wore eye-catching colors and patterns in order to attract a larger crowd. Feathers and coats were common accessories that trickled into feathered flapper costumes from the 1920’s.

This style can further be seen in the costumes of palace jesters, harlequins, and other subcategories. The iconic 3-point hats, structured collars, and vibrant motley pattern are admired and honored by designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, and, of course, John Galliano. Westwood’s jester boots and McQueen’s 2009 Paris designs are what Dazed Digital calls “otherworldly”. All this originated from European palace comedians and entertainers.

The Great Highland Bagpipe and Scottish Tartan skirt are the iconic symbols of cultural heritage and identity. The home and birthplace of the ancient plaid pattern has made its way into stunning high fashion and everyday wear. Burberry and Louis Vuitton have made statements with their signature and desired plaid patterns. Balkan embroidery has also made its way into the hands of artists. Zmijanje embroidery is a detailed technique, usually done by women, to create household items, scarves, and costumes. Embroidery, such as this, inspired the detailed, intricate designs seen in John Galliano’s Spring/Summer 2005 collection. Music and fashion are paired together to represent Scottish pride.

Love, Music

There are many undeniable music movements that involved fashion as well. While Africans, African Americans, Punks, and classical music have all made their place in European history, it's important we focus on the less-discussed factors to get a full picture of music's impact on fashion. Nonetheless, fashion and music work hand in hand not only for Europe’s history, but for the world’s.
