The Story Behind the Smidge
Hailey Moe’s story begins with humble beginnings, where her passion for fashion was born: “I didn’t have a lot growing up.” Smidge starts, “Most of my clothes were thrifted or hand-me-downs. Things never fit me well, so I had to find ways to resize my clothes, hide stains, or just give things my own flare so it was something I actually wanted to wear”. Creating clothes by hand isn’t as simple as some believe. Drafting patterns, perfecting tension/stitch width, and constructing clothing are just the start of all the difficulties that come with hand sewing.
Just like many of us, Hailey has several sources of inspiration. “I take inspo from textures, from history, shows & photos. I take a lot of inspiration now from my old pieces.” Creating clothing has many tricky traits that would easily de-influence those who aren’t built for it. A true designer understands this and uses it to their advantage. “Some things I just had to learn the hard way. Sometimes the mistakes are awesome and just the kind of detail I’m looking for. Other times, I hate it, and I end up breaking down the whole piece for parts, but I always find I learn best through just trying things even if it’s clearly not the ‘right way’.” These unique human touches are what make GetSmidged one of a kind.
“Get Dressed and Go Live Your Life”
Some designers value innovation, some value perception. Here’s Hailey on what she values: “I just think the main goal should be to live a good life. Appreciate what you have, don’t let things go to waste. People are so set on brands, super vintage, archival, etc. I can appreciate that, but clothes should be clothes. Don’t think so much about your outfit or what accessories you have on. Not every day needs to be perfectly curated. Just get dressed and go live your life.”
